Present Tense

by Amy MacLennan

Heart knocks in the now,
the now, the now—
dogs itself without memory,
just the mess of the moment,
necessary warfare, blood
in, blood out, flogs
against emptiness,
waterfall and chamber,
a living it cannot love, pounds
longing through casements,
drowns the past, no regrets,
and at the end, when
the doors hush shut,
time bruises,
will finally begin.
